[FANTASTIC FEST 2021] ‘DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING WITH ADOBE PREMIERE PRO: THE REAL-WORLD GUIDE TO SET UP AND WORKFLOW’ IS PERFECT

This may be the shortest movie review ever on Daily Grindhouse.

  • The film in question is only 40 minutes long.
  • It’s important not to say too much for fear of either spoiling the fun or simply devolving into a The Chris Farley Show-esque “remember when…” litany of awesome moments the film contains.

Directed by Hong Seong-yoon, the South Korean short film is a mash-up of genres, emotions, tones, and more that alternate at a rapid clip without ever feeling rushed or incongruent. It is a comedy, it is a romance, it is a drama, it is a biography, it is a horror film, and it is perfect. Despite its unwieldy title and various narrative twists, DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING WITH ADOBE PREMIERE PRO: THE REAL-WORLD GUIDE TO SET UP AND WORKFLOW is a simple story of a director working with an editor to complete his movie. There are references (oblique and overt) to films, filmmakers, and filmmaking that may help improve some of the moments, but none are so arcane that any viewer can’t discern the intent via context.

If possible, try to enter this as cold as possible and with a group of people equally unaware of Hong’s short. This approach is to help ensure maximum effect as watching in a theater as people cackle with laughter, shriek with startled, let out quiet “Awww”’s at the touching moments was one of those rare treats where emotions became infectious and everyone was so happy to be along for the same ride together.

DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING WITH ADOBE PREMIERE PRO: THE REAL-WORLD GUIDE TO SET UP AND WORKFLOW is as technically impressive as it is narratively bold, finding lots of clever ways of using editing software screens to advance a conversation and specific camera reveals to deliver the impact of each moment. It appears that the film will soon be on Mubi — but keep an eye out for more information. There is no higher recommendation possible for any film seen so far this year — at Fantastic Fest or otherwise — than seeking out and watching Hong Seong-Yoon’s movie.

Alan Moore once said that “Life isn’t divided into genres. It’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you’re lucky.” If that is true, then Hong Seong-Yoon has made a perfect encapsulation of life with DIGITAL VIDEO EDITING WITH ADOBE PREMIERE PRO: THE REAL-WORLD GUIDE TO SET UP AND WORKFLOW; one that is imaginative, unique, subversive, delightful, upsetting, and wholly grand viewing that must be experienced to be believed.
