It can be a pain in the ass, but it’s worth it. Recording a podcast takes a lot of work to get right, but when you hit full-tilt boogie, an experiance is created. It’s almost out of body, you can hear yourself hitting your flow, connecting with the listener. The sea of film related podcasts is polluted with mediocrity and half-assed attempts to crack wise. Few hit their flow and fewer connect with anybody outside of the ones with a microphone in front of their face.
A couple of weeks ago, the Daily Grindhouse Podcast was re-launched. Every Wednesday, my co-host Perry and I take on the hits and the hidden from the world of grindhouse cinema and beyond. It’s a tall order to deliver a weekly podcast, but after months, and in some cases years, of listening to the quality shows listed below, we are ready to hit you with some DG cool right in your cerberal cortext… or balls, whichever we hit first. The Top 10 shows listed below are mainstays at DG HQ, these are indispensable shows with seasoned hosts, brain matter with a flair for the cinematic, and pie-holes that in the case of Zom and Loaf are perfect for radio. We also crammed an additional 10 shows after the Top 10 that we dig just as much. 10. THE RIALTO REPORT

The sleaze and tease from 42nd street is right at home with Ashley West and The Rialto Report, a podcast with a bigger mission in mind. This batch of cool is dedicated to “expanding the historical record on the adult entertainment industry between the early 1960s and the mid-1980s.” I am not sure if there was a more noble effort; there probably was, but I don’t wan’t to listen to it. Give me the chatter of Rialto Report and we’ll call it good.
9. THE CRITERION CAST

Our fellow Portland podcaster Ryan Gallagher created this one-stop shop for everything Criterion. From breaking down the monthly release announcements to discussing the latest news and rumors from the Criterion-verse, Gallagher keeps the co-hosts (usually James McCormick and a third chair) and the show moving and on-topic. Depending on the releases coming out from Criterion, the show can be dry from time to time, but even then they are better than most.

I am not sure if this is 100% fact, but rumor is this show was created after Hacksaw Jim Duggan dry humped a vhs tape and put it directly into Zom’s VCR. I may be wrong, but then again, it makes sense… kind of. Loaf and Zom are your hosts through a weird and twisted world of film rants and burps, but not before they talk about the films they’ve watched for the week, how much work sucks, and who may or may not have a nice rack. These cats can be brutally honest and hide nothing from their listeners. Probably the best chemistry between hosts after GGTMC. This show also gets the distinguished honor of having the best theme song in the bunch.
7. BADASSES, BOOBS, AND BODY COUNTS

I was late to the BBandBC show. I started tuning in at some point earlier this year but quickly went back and listened to all the other shows. From the very moment host Mike Murphy launched he was solid as hell and he only got better. Not a bad place to start from. A few episodes ago Murphy added a co-host Iris Walters to the show and she quickly defined her own space and voice.
6. THE PROJECTION BOOTH

Mike White launched The Projection Booth back in March of 2011. I picked up on the show from episode 1 and quickly became hooked. The show originally was co-hosted by Mondo Justin, but after a classic episode that featured an intense disagreement/meltdown/rap-battle over LAST ACTION HERO, the two parted ways. After a series of co-hosts were tried out, St. Mary landed in the chair next to Mike and the show has never been better.

“Bringing class to trash since 1977”
These motherfuckers were born well stached, slightly drunk, and wearing polyester suits. Hosts Big Willy and The Samurai drop knowledge bombs across the cinematic spectrum. Don’t let the title fool you, these cats don’t just bust out genre favorites and obscurities, they hit anything as long as it hits an emotion. You’re going to be hard pressed to find two mean muthas who are more passionate about cinema than these cats.
4. THE GOLDEN BRIEFCASE

Hosted by Tim Buel and Jeremy Kirk (and more times than not a special guest like Evan Saathoff in a third chair), this is the most creative show on the list. Every week these cats bring an interesting topic to the table and geek it to death with smart talk. This is the official podcast of FirstShowing.net, so after your earholes soak in the sounds of topics like the art of paranoia in film, the art of the spoof, or even going pedestrian with talk about the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, you have a cool site to bookmark.
3. THE Q&A WITH JEFF GOLDSMITH

This is an interview style show but the titular Q&A takes place after a screening of a film. Though occasionally Q&As are recorded at events like Comi-Con and film festivals, the bulk of the episodes are post-screening events. Goldsmith is a very skilled interviewer who not only digs into the film in question, but also the script to screen story. I have found myself listening to entire episodes even if I haven’t seen or enjoyed the film being discussed; the mark of a good host.

Elvis Mitchel is the lone host of this interview only podcast which brings in talent for a 30 minute conversation on their current film and/or career. With guests including William Lustig, Christopher Guest, Wong Kar-wai, and Quentin Tarantino, Mitchel isn’t beholden to one genre or the other. He is, however, beholden to fascinating discussions regardless of who the guest may be and always manages a unique perspective on the subject. Mitchel is controversial to some, indispensable to others, we fall into the latter category.

Hosted by Adam Kempenaar and Josh Larsen (who replaced Matty Robinson in 2012), Filmspotting is the closest thing we have to Siskel & Ebert. There. I said it. Kempenaar and Larsen bring an impressive amount of film knowledge to their intelligent debates on modern and classic cinema. This show has long been my favorite podcast and after Larsen joined, it got even better. Now, here’s hoping frequent guest host Michael Phillips decides to join the podcast world full-time with his own show.
