THE NEW RELEASE WALL FOR 9/4: MEGAFORCE HITS DVD, RE-ANIMATOR HITS BLU, RANKIN-BASS GO GHOUL, AND MORE!

Welcome back to The Wall! We’ve scoured the release list and boiled it down, as always, to the absolute must-buys of the week. Yeah, there are more titles that are dropping, certainly bigger budgets and ad campaigns on par with a Michael Bay film, but NOTHING this week is as cool as the titles we have listed. Hope you enjoy, and keep an eye out for the September New Release Checklist later this week to make sure you book your pre-orders.

— DG PICK OF THE WEEK–

This flick makes about as much sense as a paraplegic masseuse. This shit is a mess of epic proportions… and it’s glorious; skin tight blue jumpsuits on all the wrong bodies glorious. And yet, somehow they manage some pretty solid stunts and explosions thanks in part to its director Hal Needham, a veteran stuntman of almost 35 years. Finally, MEGAFORCE is hitting DVD, far from the pixelated goodness of Blu-ray but further from the faded, fuzzy, and fucked VHS I have been rocking for the better part of three decades. Dig this good shit!

ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…

Hands down one of the greatest horror films ever made; a walk through the comedic and absurd world of the macabre. Stuart Gordon created a masterpiece that is just as effective today as it was over 25 years ago. Jeffrey Combs is creepy as fuck and Barbara Crampton is all kinds of hot, add that up and you got a badass horror flick that is here to stay. All the special features from the DVD release are making the port to Blu but I would still recommend an upgrade.

Twice the Olivia de Havilland is always worth the price of admission (the actress plays twins in this film, one good and one evil), but Robert Siodmak has done better than this film that feels little routine. See THE KILLERS (1946) as proof.

Dracula: What kind of a monster is he? A ghoul? A demon? A spook, or…?
Francesca: A human.
Dracula: They’re the worst kind.

A Rankin-Bass classic that is yet another portal to childhood. I plan on showing this one just before THE MONSTER SQUAD.

We’ll have a full review of this up soon. Long story short though; this is a solid documentary, not AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE or NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD good, but director Jason Paul Collum delivers the goods via some fun interviews with breast of the horror genre (see what I did there?).

I am more of a dog person (CUJO), but this does have its moments… however fleeting they may be.

Eli Roth may be the only cat that thinks this is the greatest horror film ever made however, it is a fun and bloody ride and a huge re-watch that is only enhanced when we roll into October. There is a really wicked sense of humor that is peppered throughout this film that is loaded with some pretty infamous death scenes.

Shit. 100% pure shit. This film is gimmicky as hell and a complete waste of a time. Getting an erection and running into a brick wall would be more fun than sitting through this trash.

I wouldn’t have pegged Boaz Yakin as a director who could work a film a like this. I mean FRESH was one of the best films of ’90s and he has written his share of genre films but when it comes to directing he has really stayed close to dramas; I just don’t see the connective tissue with being able to pull this off but damn did he nail it. This film has a tough vibe that is rooted in the 70s and Statham is nothing but hardboiled. You toss a villainous Chris Sarandon on top of that and you have a badass joint on your hands.

You know those movies that make you envious of someone who is experiencing it for the first time? This is one of those films for me. I think it is close to flawless and it represents such a game-changing type moment for the western genre; it pushed it in different directions. Robert Mitchum’s career is filled with classic performances… this is one of them.

That’s it for this week, Bastards.

We’ll be back next week with: HAMMER HOUSE OF HAMMER: THE COMPLETE SERIES, KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE (Blu), 6 BULLETS, SAFE, UMBERTO D. (Blu), PIRANHA 3DD, ARACHNOPHOBIA (Blu), WHITE VENGEANCE (Blu) and more.

Until then…

HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK, SALUTE!

SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE

I love PURSUED so much. Really hope everyone reading this column takes your advice. That’s such an under-acknowledged classic Western. Great write-up, as always.
