The sub-genre of Django films, which has fuck-all to do with DJANGO, was created by distributors anxious to find an extra buck by capitalizing on the success of the Sergio Corbucci classic. The original title of this film is IF YOU LIVE… SHOOT! A more appropriate name for a film that is masochistic, violent, dirty, gritty, and pushes the boundaries of the spaghetti western genre unlike other film in its class. This is a pretty amazing piece of filmmaking by Giulio Questi who only made three feature films, all unique and slightly off kilter, and I mean that in a flattering way. His films are just odd pieces of cinema. I haven’t seen his television work but I imagine they poses the same skewed views. Thomas Milan, as always, fucking kills in this thing as the Christ like figure known as The Stranger.
Blue Underground did a really impressive job with this transfer. It looks really crisp and is a HUGE upgrade over the DVD release in regards to both sight and sound. The DTS-HD Master Audio is good in both English and Italian, but I have to admit, on my system the Italian track sounded a little more dynamic. Not sure if I was hearing things or not. Let me know what you think. Anyway, the special features are all ported over from the DVD with nothing new added, but considering how crisp this looks, it’s worth the extra coin if you have the DVD.

Something Weird on Blu-ray is always cause to celebrate. You toss Chesty Morgan into the mix and it’s cause to throw a Double D party of classic grindhouse debauchery. As cool as this set is, they didn’t port over all of the special features from the DVD release which included some really cool archival shorts. While that’s indeed a miss, they made up for it by tossing THE IMMORAL THREE onto this release as well. Apology accepted, Captain Needa.
This is the second film in the loosely linked Samurai Revolution Trilogy from Eichi Kudo, a reluctant director of samurai cinema who went on to create some stunning films in the bloody genre. This film is more brutal than the first though I always found it to be lacking when compared to 13 ASSASSINS which is widely regarded to be one of the best samurai films of all-time. This was meant as an allegory to the student movement of 60s Japan, although it is subtle, the message and intent is clear. A good film, just not as 13 ASSASSINS great.
Oversexed psychotronic a go-go that made Jane Fonda a staple in my pubescent dreams. This flick is electric sex super charged to power a fleet of erections the size of a small country. This oozes insanity and metaphors. This is sex, drugs, rock and roll, and Fonda. Dig it.
Barbara Hershey gets raped by a ghost and Ron Silver has an impressive beard in this mediocre horror movie that never worked for me. There was a time when this was considered kind of groundbreaking. Now, it just doesn’t deliver the goods like a true classic should. It has its fans though…
Another dose from The Mistress of the Dark taking apart bad films one frame at a time. I have’t seen this episode, but I am anxious to see what’s what.
Goddamn this flick makes me happy. I remember this playing on HBO with KIDCO on a fucking loop. This was meant to be a big star vehicle for Rogers, turns out it just made him hungry for roasted chicken.
A shit-box that was created for Howie Long as an entry into the action genre is so bad he makes Frank Stallone look like Brando. The story is weak, Long is weak, and the action is ridiculous. Hence, I love sticking this bad boy in the player with a guilty grin.
Watching this film you can clearly see the touch of producer John Landis. This is a smart and funny little horror comedy. It’s really an unassuming film with a lot of quirky performances. Really dug the hell outta this.
Not one of Bobcat’s better films, but it’s worth a watch. I just thought it was a little forced and pounded the message with a sledgehammer instead of with subtlety.
This is probably one of the more original films I have seen this year. Dafoe plays a master hunter sent into the Tasmanian wilderness to hunt a tiger. I know the plot doesn’t sound like much but this flick is balls-out adventure filmmaking and oddly kind of meditative.
