GRINDHOUSE GROOVES – The latest in psychotronic music videos!

MIXING 8MM WITH 8 TRACKS.

It’s time for another edition of Grindhouse Grooves, showing the latest videos who take their cues from the more dingy side of the cinematic tracks. This time we’ve got dangerous girls galore, first person carnage and Kenneth Anger!

Django Django
Wor
(Dir. Jim Demuth)

Radley Metzger fans may recall the impressive sequence at the beginning of THE LICKERISH QUARTET in this video depicting a similar Wall of Death in India, and while the performers may not be as sexy as Silvana Venturelli, their stunts are no less death-defying.

Race for Life
Connection
(Dir. David Wilson)

Race For Life – Cancer Slam from David Wilson on Vimeo.

The song may be twenty years old (good lord, I’m ancient) but the cause is good, and this music video commissioned to play at Cancer Research UK’s ‘Race For Life’ events across the UK in 2013 serves up a group of ladies that wouldn’t look out of place in THE WARRIORS or SWITCHBLADE SISTERS dancing in a junkyard, set to kick cancer’s sorry ass.

deadmau5 and Imogen Heap

Telemiscommunications

(Dir. Imogen Heap and Colin Gordon)

Dozens of different animators each using their own techniques were involved with the creation of this deadmau5/Imogen Heap co-production, resulting a fascinating and hypnotic game of animated “telephone” set in an airport.

Scary Cherry and the Bang Bangs

Don’t Wanna

976-EVIL and FREDDY’S DEAD star Lezlie Deane is the front woman for this Dallas-based punk band, but even if she weren’t, it’d still be a catchy, butt-kicking production.

Biting Elbows
Bad Motherfucker
(Dir. Ilya Naishuller)

Do you like first-person shooters? Do you like crazy violent videos? Do you want to just rock out for four and a half minutes? If so, you’ll love this deranged piece of one-take(?) filmmaking that’s gleefully out of control.

Daddy
Love in the Old Days
(Dir. James Franco and Tim O’Keefe)

No matter what you think of James Franco, you can’t deny that the guy’s got a twisted sensibility, and while we’ve seen music videos inspired by Kenneth Anger in the past (like Matthew Dear’s “Her Fantasy” covered here) this is the first to actually feature the filmmaker, here presiding over a masked (and NSFW) bacchanal. Check out an interview with Franco about the film here.

Buke and Gase
General Dome
(Dir. Buke and Gase)

Vintage ephemeral films whipped together with distorted images into a montage backed by a solid garage rock tune? The men on screen seem to be having a bad drug trip, but the viewer’s will be all trippy goodness.

The Middle Eight
Latter Days
(Dir. Matt Christensen)

A stop-motion party goes out of control in animator Matt Christensen’s insanely creative video that recalls the works of Bruce Bickford.

Mike Luck
Cityscape
(Dir. Maxmana)

Mike Luck – Cityscape from maxmana on Vimeo.

Mike Luck’s groovy DRIVE-like sounds get an appropriately animated video that’s as low-key and comfortable as the music it supports.

Sci Fi Sol
Connected
(Dir. Joseph R. Lewis)

The first video in a twelve part epic of lo-fi sci-fi (The first four parts are available on YouTube, with more to follow) about a video game designer who creates a rock star that comes to life and begins to take over the world, Joseph R. Lewis’s ambitious Chicago-lensed project fetaures some catchy pop tunes and inventively colorful videos, making the most of their low-budget origins with visions of florescent images, future worlds and vintage tech standing in for future visions.

Drowning Pool
One Finger and a Fist

(Dir. Vulpine Films)

I’d have liked to see more of the women’s prison-based fight club and less of the band, but I can’t deny that a harsh bout of savagery works as a solid way to backup Drowning Pool’s tones.

Be back when the jukebox has been restocked,

– Paul Freitag-Fey
