A “video nasty” was the UK version of the “parental advisory” label that started appearing on CD’s in the late 80’s. A “video nasty” was a video cassette that was criticized for its excessive violent content by the press, religious organizations, and other outlets. HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY was slapped with that label mainly because of two violent murders that occur in the film which are gruesome even by today’s standards. The picture went through several edited releases but we are now lucky enough to have the full uncut version courtesy of Blue Underground (Bill Lustig’s distribution house). This is a brilliant film by Lucio Fulci that I features a classic story and a great, methodical approach to the direction. Though ZOMBIE remains his best film, HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY has to be a very close second.
See you on forty deuce,
