Goddamn I love seeing flicks that we have talked about on our Featured Filmmaker page get their (often times long deserved) release date. I’ve been wanting to share this bat-shit insane flick with you Bastards since we first got eyes on it but the wait is over. Now you can revel in the joys of excess in your very own home. After a ten year hiatus James Bickert has returned to filmmaking. It’s not a subtle return, he’s not slowly opening the door and quietly announcing his presence; he’s kicking down the door, guns blazing, taking no prisoners, and conquering the world. DEAR GOD NO! is an unapologetic homage to classic grindhouse cinema. It walks along the jagged edge of outlaw filmmaking, walking with a brooding strut through bikesploitation, sexploitation, man-in-suit, and other genres that exploitation aficionados are going to pick up and salute. ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…
This is the first film in Kudo’s Samurai Revolution Trilogy, followed by THE GREAT KILLING, and THE ELEVEN SAMURAI, all in stunning black and white. Though they are each strong films, neither of the other films in the trilogy reach the heights of the first film (Takashi Miike’s remake came close). 13 ASSASSINS is brooding but contemplative, exploring loyalty and vengeance, innocence and guilt, a constant contrast that permeates the film until the final battle but returns to punctuate the message at the end. This is a remarkable film, I just wish someone would whisper the sweet nothings of special features to AnimEigo. You’re either a Beatles man or an Elvis man. Well, the Head Bastard here is an Elvis fan. I just don’t dig the Beatles. They have a few songs that I can get up on but if I had a choice between listening to one of their albums cover to cover or shooting myself in the head… lock and load, baby. Having said that, I do kind of like this flick, I think the animation is spectacular and the story is clever, even if it gets a bit too heavy towards the end.
This release is one of the many reasons we dig Warner Archives. This isn’t a great flick but it does feature Heston in a film that looks and feels like a Hammer production so it’s worth a grab.
For those that didn’t pick up volumes 1-8 of the Stooges collection that Sony has been releasing, now’s your chance to grab them in one huge package with 3 bonus discs containing all new content never before released. This is an amazing set and based on what I have heard for Stooge aficionados, worth picking up even if you have the other volumes just for the 3 disc bonus set.
The best John Ford western not directed by John Ford, this one of The Duke’s best films. Originally shot in 3-D, director John Farrow had an assist from Ford who shot the climactic fight.
This is one of the best films that Eastwood ever directed and one of the best performances from Costner. This is a tough and gritty flick with a surprising amount of heart. In a lot of ways, this film feels like a product of the 70s when studios were taking chances and making pictures that were more concerned with characters than the action. After all, once you care about the characters even the most modest action scenes have more weight; A PERFECT WORLD understands this better than most.
Haven’t seen this yet… I went from being excited to curious to my current state which is disinterested. I’ll let you know what I think once I get around to it… should that happen.
I hated this flick. I hated the gimmicky nature of casting real Navy Seals, I hated the story of the film, and I hated the studio for robbing me of 111 minutes. If you really want to see our military in action, check out Sebastian Junger’s RESTREPO.
AND FINALLY… I EAT CROW.
BAD ASS is out today on DVD and Blu-ray. I thought this flick was a complete fake. After talking to Craig Moss about the film and the initial reports that this was nothing more than a fake trailer; I thought it was a fake. From Moss telling me he wasn’t sure if the film was real or not to the “borrowed” scene from RED HEAT (which you can see the side by side comparison for yourself here), nothing felt legit. However, I was wrong. I am not sure how you show respect for the cast and crew by casting a questioning light over the entire project, but I was wrong. Today I eat crow. Tomorrow, I watch BAD ASS and hope it is the film that I thought it could be when I first heard about it: An ass-kicking Trejo doing what he does best which is serving a giant plate of street justice.
