This time on Grindhouse Grooves, we’ve got Count Floyd, a dancing exorcist, a good use of the Prelinger Archives and more!
THE WET SECRETS
NIGHTLIFE
DIR. TREVOR ANDERSON
Count Floyd returns! Joe Flaherty reprises his “SCTV” role as Floyd takes out the latest tween sparkly vampire flick from the library and finds this current age of bloodsucker lacking. With a bartender in an Elvira dress as a bonus!
RIPTIDE
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NITE
DIR. CROOKED LINE
RipTide – In The Middle of the Nite – Official video by Stefan Glerum & Crooked Line from Crooked Line on Vimeo.
It’s high rollers only at the futuristic street race set at the title time in this solid animated video for Riptide’s hypnotic track. Watch out for the boobs.
THE NOTWIST
KONG
DIR. YU SATO
Will the title giant ape come to the rescue of a man during a torrential flood? Only time will tell in this cute animated short that works beautifully with the Notwist’s song. Bonus points for the intermission ad.
MR. JACKSON
SOMETIMES
DIR. ALEX AMOLING
Mr. Jackson – Sometimes from Alex Amoling on Vimeo.
The first chapter of a series for Mr. Jackson’s new album, Amoling’s well-lensed piece presents a world of murder, strippers and danger, and while I’m not sure exactly what’s happening, it’s certainly compelling to watch.
MYSTERY SKULLS
GHOST
DIR. OH YEAH WOW
When a young lady is possessed, an exorcist is called (as is the custom), but the gestures that cure her ills may be a bit more musical than you’d expect.
RIKKHA
PRETTY GIRL
DIR. CHRISTOPHER SCHEPARD
From the “feature presentation” riff at the beginning to the climax, this vid for Rikkha’s garage-meets-glam track wears its grindhouse cred on its sleeve in a high-energy story of ladies, zombies, rollerstakes, nunchucks and blood.
DAS MUERTE
ALL THOSE DELICATE CUTS
DIR. PHIL MUCCI
Mucci’s video for Huntress was our pick for the best psychotronic video of the year in 2013, and he returns in fine form taking his style and giving it a B&W, noir-ish vibe in a tale of grimy vengeance.
LITTLE DRAGON
KLAPP KLAPP
DIR. TAYLOR COHEN
A ritual at a gravesite has repercussions in this fairly minimalist but still very well made video.
MARISSA NADLER
WAS IT A DREAM
DIR. RYAN HAMILTON WALSH
The use of footage from early silent films (including 1915’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND and 1926’s THE BAT) gives an etheral vibe that works will the newly-shot footage.
XIU XIU
STUPID IN THE DARK
DIR. AMIR SCOUCRI
From Xiu Xiu’s latest album, “Angel Guts: Red Classroom” comes this disturbing work about a relationship gone really, really sour. Things get bloody.
BLACK LIPS
BOYS IN THE WOOD
DIR. MATT SWINSNKY
There’s a hell of a lot going on in the red-lit woods, from a baseball bat bashing to drugs to some bizarre sexual shenanigans.
FOSTER THE PEOPLE
COMING OF AGE
DIR. BRHTR
I may be getting a but burned out on ’80s retro videos, but this honestly feels like a great recreation of the soundtrack video for a movie from the ’80s that never existed, something about life lessons being learned, photos being taken and, well, coming of age. BRTHR directed the similarly-good retro video for MS MR’s “Think of You” last year.
GARDENS & VILLA
BULLET TRAIN
DIR. TONY KATAI
I don’t mind this retro-style video either, as the washed out colors, minimal special effects and careful fashion make this resemble something you’d see on a public access channel in the ’80s with just enough of a tweak to let you know they’re aware of what they’re doing.
SECRET COLOURS
IT CAN’T BE SIMPLE
DIR. ERIC HEHR
Chicago band Secret Colors used the resources of the Prelinger Archives to gather up footage for their groovy track, resulting in a captivating little celebration of found footage.
TEMPLES
MESMERIZE
DIR. BENJAEL HALFMADERHOLZ
UK psych rock with tripped-out animation that feels like the bacdrop for a cult orientation video? Yes please.
SHAKA PONK
WANNA GET FREE
DIR. SHAKA PONK
The French are just fucking insane. There are tentacles and dragons and Day of the Dead masks and Wonder Woman. Let’s leave it at that.
LOUD NEIGHBOR
THE FELLONSHIP
DIR. W0RKT34M
A couple’s hunting excursion takes an unexpected turn in this short film for techno band Loud Neighbor’s epic-length track.
KWES
[ROLLERBLADES]
DIR. IAN PONS JEWELL
What starts out like a simple video involving rollerskating gets very dd and strangely hypnotic, an effect that matches Kwes’s similar track perfectly.
WARM BRAINS
HAPPY ACCIDENTS
DIR. YVETTE PAXINOS
I have no idea what the hell is going on in this video, but I like the hell out of it.
UDO KIER
DER ADLER
Our retro video this time feature NYMPHOMANIAC‘s Udo Kier. There are pretty ladies, stabbings, and many Udo faces.
