GRINDHOUSE GROOVES – THE LATEST IN PSYCHOTRONIC MUSIC VIDEOS!

This time on Grindhouse Grooves, we’ve got an ’80s fantasy homage, a hot rod worm, plenty of whacked-out animation and more!

DOG BLOOD
CHELLA RIDE
DIR. GOLDEN WOLF

Dog Blood – Chella Ride from Golden Wolf on Vimeo.

Dooooogs iiiiin spaaaaaace! It may seem like a concept ripe for comedy, but the concept is treated with amazingly inventive flair that works great with this track by Dog Blood, a collaboration between Skrillex and Boys Noize.

AVEY TARE’S SLASHER FLICKS
LITTLE FANG
DIR. CHARLES J. GIBSON

A little Muppets, a little vintage horror and a whole lotta WTF as a puppet cat goes to a carnival.

BREAKFAST
GRIZZLY ADAMS
DIR. ORSON OBLOWITZ

Inspired by ’80s fantasy films (and transferred through a VHS filter accordingly), Oblowitz’s take on Breakfast’s ghostly track has echoes of THE PRINCESS BRIDE and LABYRINTH up its sleeve to pleasant effect.

DUM DUM GIRLS
ARE YOU OKAY
DIR. BREWER

Bret Easton Ellis provided the script for this 11-minute psychothriller that’s ostensibly a promotion of Dum Dum Girls’ track but serves as an eerie tale of hypnosis even beyond that.

THE SLOW POISONER
HOT ROD WORM
DIR. JOHN SKIPP & ANDREW KASCH

The Slow Poisoner – Hot Rod Worm from Andrew Kasch on Vimeo.

Stop motion animation (courtesy Michael Granberry), vibrant colors and a rockabilly vibe come together for a great wild ride in this little flick about, well, a hot rod worm co-directed by “The Bridge” co-author John Skipp.

JULIO BASHMORE
PEPPERMINT
DIR. NOAH HARRIS

Julio Bashmore – Peppermint from noah harris on Vimeo.

Your daily recommended allowance of batshit animation can be found in this trippy music video for Bashmore’s dance track.

THE TELEKINETICS
SCIENCE FICTION
DIR. DEEPER UNDERSTANDING

‘50s and ‘60s sci-fi flicks are used well in this found footage video for the Telekinetics’ track, with bits from THE THING, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, FORBIDDEN PLANET and more.

JPNSGIRLS
MUSHROOMS
DIR. JESSE DAVIDGE

The planets take over in this visually impressive animated video in which things turn out pretty badly for humanity, or at least one metropolis.

OFF
HYPNOTIZED
DIR. CHRIS GRISMER

The life of a low-rent Hollywood Boulevard superhero is a pretty miserable one, as seen in this video for Off’s punk track.

FLUX PAVILLION & DILLON FRANCIS
I”M THE ONE
DIR. MENZ

Sure, anyone can make a cat video, but few can make one as insanely trippy as this one, which imagines what goes on when you’re away from the house. Or at least it starts out like that before it gets into something far more insane.

ANDA VOLLEY
LAURA INSIDE THE GHOST MACHINE
DIR. RUNE NESS

Stop-motion, a creepy looking doll and the feel of a Brothers Quay short that also reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode “The Invaders.”

THE AFGHAN WHIGS
ALGIERS
DIR. PHILIP HARDER

There’s a definite Morricone influence running through the Whigs’ song, one that the western-influenced video utilizes nicely.

TEXAS MICROPHONE MASSACRE
CRICKETS
DIR. LUCY SICA

It’s the end of the world via contagion in this apocalyptic video that shows that something a low-budget can look neat with some good color instincts and solid editing.

FAIR WEATHER FRIENDS
FAKE LOVE
DIR. DAWID KREPSKI

Covered in blood, you know the woman who lights a cigarette at the beginning of this moody video is responsible for something and as we see her story in reverse, we get hints of the real story, but it’s well-shot and cryptic enough to not feel like a retread of the concept.

JENNY WILSON
PYRAMIDS
DIR. JENNY WILSON, DANIEL WIRTBERG

A retro-VHS look video, sure, but a damn good one, with great visual flair that works beautifully with the hypnotic track that would have been at home in the dimly-lit basements of any early ’80s “Night Flight” watcher.

LONDON GRAMMAR
HEY NOW
DIR. CHRIS ULLENS

There’s some strange activity going on in the forest in this hauntingly beautiful stop-motion video for London Grammar’s equally-haunting track.

IGGY AZALEA
FANCY
DIR. DIRECTOR X

Does a music video homage to CLUELESS count as psychotronic? Eh, CLUELESS is directed by FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH‘s Amy Heckerling, it’s got a cult following, it’s pretty good, and I like the song and video. I’ll allow it, because it’s my damn column.

LAAZ ROCKIT
LEATHERFACE

Our retro video this time comes from the soundtrack to LEATHERFACE: THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, and while the song’s fun, damn, does Leatherface deserve a better video than some clips from the movie while the band rocks out in the middle of a desert.
