— DG PICK OF THE WEEK–
Damiano Damiani knows how to direct action scenes and create tension. Look at films like HOW TO KILL A JUDGE or CONFESSIONS OF A POLICE CAPTAIN (but skip AMITYVILLE II) for proof of that. His masterpiece though is A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL. Impressive action, probably the best script he has had thanks to Franco Solinas (THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS), and a crazy but tough as nails Klaus Kinski. Dig this good shit, Bastards.
ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…
Not sure what took Warner Brothers so long to drop this, but it has been available in the UK since November of 2010. All the extras are ported over from the original releases but what makes this worth your scratch is that there is a fifth disc full of new making-of documentaries and each of the four films have had their audio remastered to a DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack. RIIIIIIIIIIIIGS! Your old DVDs and Blus of this series have just been revoked.
Horny puppets, a man eating mermaid and Brother Theodore (Reuben Klopek from THE ‘BURBS) as a Nazi lunatic… done and done. This JAWS porn parody from 1976 is all kinds of kinky and crazy wrapped up in seaweed and boobs… lots and lots of boobs. What’s surprising though is that this actually works. Yeah, it has that ’76 porn stamp but the laughs are genuine and there’s no denying that there was some real thought that went into this. Dig the score of the film by Brad Fiedel (TERMINATOR, T2, TRUE LIES).
Speaking of boobs… Dyanne Thorne is back with her twins of terror in the third film in the ILSA series. This one doesn’t match the brutality of the first one but it doubled down on the dirty, hands down the sleaziest of the series… which of course means it’s our favorite after the original.
This gets lumped in with the giallos but this is more of a conventional murder mystery than anything else. It is very much removed from an Argento, Bava, Cavaro, etc. Although it has pacing problems it is worth a watch.
We don’t really give a fuck about Harry Potter working a horror film, but when it comes to Hammer making a new horror flick we stand at attention pretty damn quick. This may not feel like vintage Hammer, but it’s a tremendous effort. In terms of their recent films WAKE WOOD is still the best of the bunch but WOMAN IN BLACK is going to have a pretty high re-watch for this kid.
That’s it for this week, Bastards.
We’re back next week with: FLAREUP, AGGRESSION SCALE, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and more.
Until then…
HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK, SALUTE!
