THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.
THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017 (All show times are local)
You know you want to see young, handsome Marlon Brando playing the leader of a motorcycle gang on the big screen. The Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR is giving you that opportunity by showing THE WILD ONE at 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Yes, it’s cheesy as all hell, but you have to admit there is a certain charm to Sylvester Stallone’s belief that he could end the cold war via a ROCKY movie. ROCKY IV is screening from a 35mm print at Quad Cinema in New York at 9:15 pm. Go cry at the death of Apollo Creed one more time. Tickets and info can be found here.
It’s Shakespeare in space as stoic leading man-era Leslie Nielsen and Robby the Robot star in FORBIDDEN PLANET. It is showing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Omaha, NE at 7:15 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
The “Plastics” will be out in force as MEAN GIRLS is showing at the Amherst Cinema in Amherst, MA at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Doc Films on the University of Chicago campus has two very different but entertaining genre films screening from 35mm prints. First up is Adam Wingard’s very funny and brutal twist on the home invasion horror subgenre YOU’RE NEXT at 7:00 pm. Then at 9:15 pm it is Michael Mann’s epic crime drama HEAT. Tickets are $5 at the door for each film. Info can be found here.
