[DAILY RUNDOWN] TODAY’S COOL SCREENINGS!

THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 2017 (All show times are local)

David Cronenberg’s masterful A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE is playing at 7:00 pm at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX. Tickets and info can be found here.

STRANGER THAN PARADISE, the directorial breakthrough from Jim Jarmusch, is screening from a 35mm print at Quad Cinema in New York at 9:30 pm. Along with it is a showing of a 4K restoration of Charles Chaplin’s 1917 short film THE IMMIGRANT. Tickets and info can be found here.

The Denver Film Society is screening the Coen Bros.’ haunting and frightening NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN at 6:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

If you like your Coen Bros. films on the less bleak side, you can always catch THE BIG LEBOWSKI at the Academy Theater in Portland, OR at 4:15 pm and 8:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

FilmScene in Iowa City, IA is screening Dario Argento’s European cut of George A. Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD at 10:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

The Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco wants to take you back to a simpler, happier time when Ivan Reitman and Bill Murray collaborating on a slobs vs. snobs comedy still meant something. MEATBALLS is showing at 7:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

I am sure other theaters have done this double feature before, but I am just unaware of it. The Castro Theatre in San Francisco is screening WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? at 2:30 pm and 7:00 pm from a 35m print and the Maysles brothers’ landmark documentary GREY GARDENS at 5:00 pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
