THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.
FRIDAY, JULY 7, 2017 (All show times are local)
Who knew that Walter Matthau would be so good at playing the hardboiled lead of a violent film noir? Don Siegel apparently knew and cast him to great effect in CHARLEY VARRICK. It’s playing at BAMcinématek in Brooklyn at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
The daffy, gory, better-than-it-should-be sequel BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR is screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Houston at 10:15 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Infamous horror-comedy THE NECRO FILES is screening at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn as the midnight movie. Tickets and info can be found here.
Sure, it’s a massive, soulless franchise movie, but Brian De Palma brings a lot of panache to MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. It’s the midnight movie at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak, MI. Tickets and info can be found here.
Quentin Tarantino’s raucous western DJANGO UNCHAINED is the midnight movie at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles. This is a 35mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.
THE BROOD, David Cronenberg’s bleak, horror film twist on the child custody battle genre, is the midnight movie at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA. This is a 35mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.
As part of their 70mm film festival, the Music Box Theatre in Chicago is screening TOP GUN (a.k.a. Tony Scott’s ode to machismo covering up homoerotic tension). Tickets and info can be found here.
Quad Cinema in New York is screening a 35mm print of Robert Altman’s sad but beautiful western MCCABE & MRS. MILLER at 6:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
The double feature of ROBOCOP and CLASS OF 1999 is playing at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, NY at 10:00 pm. Both films are being screened from 35mm prints. Tickets and info can be found here.
