Way before MORTAL KOMBAT director Paul W.S. Anderson director got his hands on Capcom’s popular zombie game RESIDENT EVIL, none other than master of the undead George Romero was attached to write and direct a film adaptation. However, production outfit Constantin Films had doubts about the viability of the project, thinking that Romero’s version was too violent and likely to earn an NC-17 to be made, and thus we were robbed of what could have been one of the greatest video-game horror movies ever made.
But fear you not, readers, because while you will never get to see Romero’s vision, you will now have a chance to hear it! Our fine friends at the Pod And The Pendulum podcast, Mike Snoonian and Jerry Smith, have been entertaining their listeners during the COVID quarantine by remotely recording bonus episodes of their show, with a rep cast of familiar Horror Twitter names, including filmmaker Izzy Lee, iHorror’s Jacob Davison, Nat Brehmer of Bloody Disgusting, Ghastly Grinning’s Brian Keiper, and Daily Grindhouse’s own Mike Vanderbilt and yours truly, reading unproduced horror screenplays. Already done: MAXIMUM KING, Shay Hatton’s insane recounting of the making of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, and the original draft of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5 screenplay. But tonight, at 7 p.m. EST, we will be reading Romero’s original RESIDENT EVIL screenplay and we’re doing it live on YouTube as well! Join us alongside fellow castmates Diana Porter, Erin Fitzgerald, Grace Nunez-Sobieralski, and Veronica Maitland as we bring Romero’s gory, true-to-the-game vision to life.
You can check out the live stream here at 7pm EST:
