[SHORT FILM OF THE WEEK] “Social Mediasochist” by Common Shiner

Sad times at slasher high

We are constantly looking for new and different films when it comes to bringing you the best in genre entertainment. Short films are often where you find the most exciting new filmmakers taking chances, yet most audiences don’t seek them out. With that in mind, we will be showcasing a short film each week in an effort to give a signal boost to shorts we enjoy.

Hi all! My name is Rob and while it’s a heavy burden to take over this feature from Matt for a week, I thought I’d shake it up a bit by going with something that is a music video first, but still a short film. Made in 2014 by the band Common Shiner and filmmaker Zoran Gvojic, “Social Mediasochist” is a brief jaunt into the world of pop rock, high school crushes, and masked killers. A mish-mash of two of the ’80s most beloved styles— the high school RomCom and the slasher —”Social Mediasochist” is brimming with references to tons of great and random horror films, from the obvious to the obscure.

Prom Night V?

It’s a fun short that moves at a clip propelled by Common Shiner’s fun ode to love and pining. It’s less than five minutes long, but packs in a ton of visual information, jokes, and fun references in that short running time to grant it a lasting impression that should give it a recurring spot on your Halloween Mood Board.

Enjoy the short film, and Matt will return from the fiery depths of Cinepocalypse next week!
