It’s Sunday, so things have been quiet as far as breaking news and big premieres, but not quiet in my personal life! I’m exhausted, and it’s not even Monday yet. All of that taken into account, I only have one thing to recommend today, and it’s something that has been out for at least a week but which I only just saw today: The trailer to the new film from writer/ director/ moviemaking megamind David Cronenberg.

(This part is weirdly funny to me because it’s like: “Here’s three great films at random. Could just as well be any other three films this guy made. You can’t go wrong!” That’s my opinion, I guess, but occasionally my opinions are more like facts than opinions.)
THE SHROUDS!

The trailer to David Cronenberg’s new movie! Grief, Cronenberg-style. Looks awesome and creepy. But I could do without the pull-quotes from critics, in this trailer and in any other, at this point. In this case, the first one onscreen is obnoxious, the second is correct but also “duh,” and the rest are probably fine in context of full reviews but don’t add anything to the trailer experience. Business-wise, distributors probably include these pull-quotes because A) they signal to arthouse audiences that the movie is going to be critic-friendly and reassures them that this comes pre-approved and B) it makes critics wet to see their names on screen and probably makes them friendlier to the distributors, which in turn gives A) another boost. Good for them, I guess.
For me, trailers are best when they suggest what kind of movie I can look forward to. This one does that, but I didn’t need to see any words on screen. The images and performances and sounds were already selling me on it just fine.
