The DG List: Ten of Horror Film’s Greatest Screams

Halloween is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate the devil’s holiday than by putting together a list that Satan himself might listen to on his iPod. Enjoy!

10. Patricia Owens in THE FLY (1958)

Until the climactic scene of THE FLY, you never quite know what scientist Andre Delambre has done to himself, though your imagination certainly fills in the gaps. He spends most of the film unable to speak, with a large black cloth covering his head. However, when it finally slips away and reveals Andre’s giant fly-head.. well.. his wife Helene (Patricia Owens) lets out the shriek of a lifetime. You can hear it briefly in the film’s AWESOME trailer. Seriously, one of the best trailers ever. – Sweetback

9. Darren Ewing in TROLL 2 (1990)

This one needs little introduction, particularly if you’ve seen the amazing documentary BEST WORST MOVIE which focuses on the horribly misguided (and hilarious) monster movie directed by Claudio Fragasso. Perhaps the film’s most well known scene, Darren Ewing’s delivery (and extended scream) have become infamous on the internet as one of the most gleefully awful moments in the film. It’s so connected with Ewing that his Twitter handle is @ArnoldOMG – Sweetback

8. Judy Geeson in INSEMINOID (1981)

Aka HORROR PLANET

Carol Burnett once joked that giving birth is like taking your lower lip and forcing it over your head.  Giving natural (?) birth to twin aliens must be like wrapping the lower lip around your entire body as evidenced by the heavy metal type screams Judy Geeson belts out during a birthing scene in this trashy sci-fi effort.  The woman could give AC/DC’s Brian Johnson a run for his money. –  Poe

7. Denise Cheshire in JAWS (1975)

JAWS is full of excellent scary moments, but my personal favorite comes right at the beginning where a skinny dipping Denise Cheshire (and the audience) encounters the shark for the first time. We get that great underwater cam coming at her legs, before we get the shot of her being pulled under. And then we’re off to the races as she’s hurled around while screaming like a banshee. Absolutely terrifying, and a good reason why so many people gave up swimming after the film’s release. – Sweetback

6. Donald Sutherland in INVASION OF

   THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)

There are not many closing shots as haunting as the big reveal at the end of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. The flick is a downer to begin with. The scream at the end just twists the knife. It also doesn’t hurt that Don is one weird looking motherfucker to begin with. – The Creeper

5. Linnea Quigley in

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985)

Quigley got in one hell of a dance at the graveyard before she busted out one of her trademark screams while being munched on by the undead in nothing but a ripped t-shirt. Quigley would also belt out some classics in NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS, and others. – G

4. Robert Shaw in JAWS (1975)

Being eaten alive by one of Earth’s predators sounds about as much fun as dragging your balls across five miles of shredded glass. Devoured alive by an animal you hate with a passion sounds even worse as demonstrated by the blood curdling half screams, half growls of Robert Shaw’s Captain Quint during his classic death scene in JAWS.  Shaw’s throat must have taken one hell of a beating as he screams at high volume while the giant shark wolfs him down. His demise remains one of cinema’s grisliest ends. – Poe

3. Marilyn Burns in THE TEXAS

CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (1974)

Of course, no list of best cinematic screams would be complete without Sally Hardesty’s bout with insanity at the Hewitt dinner table. The scream lasts forever, and Tobe Hooper edits it masterfully. – The Creeper

2. Jamie Lee Curtis in HALLOWEEN (1977)

Curtis is the slasher genre’s most popular scream queen. Nobody in the slasher world would be where they are without Jamie Lee belting out a chorus of terror. There are multiple points in the movie that queue up the shrieks but it’s her panic run through the streets of the neighborhood screaming for help that takes the bloody cake. – G

1. Janet Leigh in PSYCHO (1960)

The scream that launched the slasher genre. Janet Leigh’s classic cries of terror and agony while being stabbed to death in a shower remains one of horror’s most unsettling sound effects. Combined with Bernard Herrmann’s ultra classic score, they make up film’s most famous death scene. – Poe
