Bob Hoskins has always been a bit of a missed opportunity here in the states. Directors never seem to tap into his true skills. He has a danger about him, an explosive energy that when used correctly produces a truly epic performance. THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY gives us Hoskins unhinged. It is raw, powerful and about as dangerous as you can get on celluloid. This film is a shot of whiskey and a punch in the face kind of tough. Director John Mackenzie would never come close to making another film this good, and would never use meat hooks in quite the same way.
