This incredible actioner about French resistance fighters and their battle to keep a train full of priceless art out of Germany remains one of the best World War II films to come out of the 60s. Director John Frankenheimer focuses on realism as well as explosive action in a deep film that offers up a lot to think about as the film’s protagonist (Burt Lancaster in a typically stellar performance) struggles with the moral decisions of destroying human lives to save the essence of a country’s culture. A timeless flick worth repeated viewings.
