— DG PICK OF THE WEEK–
The first cut of the film was a mess. The shark looked terrible and not a single shot matched the other. A decision was made in post to remove the majority of the scenes involving the mechanical creature. Though Spielberg wanted to just insert documentary footage of sharks, it was editor Verna Fields who argued for the cuts. Without Fields, I am sure we would still have a very good film. After all, it would still have amazing performances and a well crafted story in the best traditions of very B-movies that it killed when it debuted. I just think that a lot of the fans of this film have Fields to thank. Full Blu-ray review coming soon.
ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…
The last time I saw an official game-changer when it came to action films was THE KILLER (1989). Under the direction of John Woo, there was an incredible dance of controlled chaos that surrounded every moment of action. Chow Yun-Phat put everything he had into each pull of the trigger, never desperate, always full of intent. THE RAID: REDEMPTION is a game-changer. It is a visceral, emotional fight down to the last man. It not only lives up to the hype, but it takes the hype, beats the hell out of it and asks “who’s next?!” Click here for the full Blu-ray review.
I haven’t seen this since the Fall of last year but it was on my Top 10 list for 2012 and I am anxious to see it again. This film plays the slow-burn to a creepy effect. Director Ben Wheatley is going to do some cool stuff in the future. Dude needs a good vigilante film.
I didn’t dig this as much as some did. I am a little burned out on the zombie genre but this has enough moments to recommend a watch. It has some really funny scenes and a kind of Abbott and Costello vibe to the whole thing but characters come and go too quick and the ones that stick around aren’t good enough to carry an entire film.
Queue up the goofiest tag team man- in-suit wrestling match every filmed.
Kaiju was never so bad…yet so good.
Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks? SHAFT! Ya damn right!
Mario Van Peebles got the filmmaking genes from Dad and made a slick as hell flick with Ice-T (who is a baadasssss motherfucker) and Wesley Snipes in a vintage performance. This is good shit Bastards. I just wish Mario followed this up with another solid flick instead of POSSE, I bet he does as well.
A seven hour silent french serial doesn’t really belong on a site like ours but Sweetback swears by this. He said he likes to rub it on his crotch and call it sugar-tits. So, we’ll give it a shot and see if it has the same effect.
This arrived too late for a viewing before this column but it’s safe to saw this is a must by.
1. It’s Synapse so you know you can trust it.
2. It was very well reviewed on the festival circuit with heavy praise for both director and cast.
That’s it for this week, Bastards.
We’re back next week with: HALLOWEEN 4 & 5 (Blu), EXTREME CANADIAN HORROR: 5 MOVIE COLLECTION, FRANKENSTEIN 80, JOYSTICKS and more.
Until then…
