DG PICK OF THE WEEK

This fucker is packing all kinds of heat and if you need DG to breakdown why this film kicks an unholy amount of ass then pal of mine you’re on the wrong website. Brian De Palma, working from a script by Oliver Stone, directed Al Pacino in one of the best roles of his career. That is a trifecta of talent that is flat out dangerous.

Remember in LETHAL WEAPON when Murtaugh first gets on the scene of the skydiving junkie/porn star and tells the hooker/witness that she’s “All dressed up with no one to blow”? That’s how I feel about this flick. It looks great, smells great, and it’s ready for action but it’s kind of a mess when you start looking at the goods. The plot just collapses in on itself and the film often mistakes complexity for creativity. Still not a terrible flick, it’s just not what I want when I am looking for some vintage De Palma. However, it’s EXACTLY what I am looking for if I want to see Angie Dickinson in a shower… EXACTLY.

This flick is like being pistol whipped. It’s Peckinpah tough with some really brilliant work by Dustin Hoffman. For my money though, THE GETAWAY is, was and will forever be his masterpiece. THE WILD BUNCH is a close second. This release coming out on Blu probably means we wont be seeing the Criterion edition on Blu which is superior when it comes to the extras. Even though you are going to drop a good $40-50 bones on that version, its worth it.

The only way I have seen this bad boy is on VHS tapes that a buddy gave me back in the early 90’s. I have seen part of the first season and some of the second but I am pretty amped to see this one cover to cover. The dialogue is brilliant and the idea that they are focusing on different officers in each episode gives it a true sense of reality. Season 1 includes performances from James Farentino, Tony Lo Bianco, Vic Morrow, Lloyd Bridges, Angie Dickinson, Dean Stockwell and Kurt Russell.

After LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, this is the best film Wes Craven ever made. Unfortunately, after he made THE HILLS HAVE EYES, SWAMP THING and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, Michael Berrymen ate his brain. Come to think of it, has Berryman hooked up sometime in the past twenty or so years with John Carpenter?

These films have their followers. I am not one of them but here they are.

This is being re-released to coincide with the release of HELLRAISER II: HELLBOUND. It’s identical to the one you SHOULD have on your shelf.

I have always dug this flick. Sure it lacks the creativity of the first one but you finally get to see Pinhead and the Cenobites go bat-shit crazy and that is worth the price of admission in my book. The other sequels though are full on crap.

Quick confession: I will watch just about anything JCVD does. His films are rarely good, often ridiculous, but always full of moments when the action clicks. I haven’t seen this one yet, but goddamn if I don’t want to be watching this shit right now.

I haven’t watched this flick in probably 5 or so years so I am anxious to pop this bad boy on. This was a VHS staple in my little band of losers. Its cool and smart horror film that fully embraces the B-movie plot devices. Long live William Katt.

I have no excuse for loving this shit pile of a film. It’s not even in the same ballpark as the first but there’s something about it that just clicks with me. I am sure it has nothing to do with my love of fucking terrible films.

Some people have really cool stories about how they came to know the Universal Monsters. They have films that they can connect that discovery to: DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN, ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. I have the fucking DRAK PACK. These kooky bastards sent me on the road to learning about the things that go bump in the night. Well I guess if I am being transparent with you it was DRAK PACK, Count Chocula and Franken Berry…. I was a chubby sum’bitch.

We haven’t had a chance to check this out but the buzz has been off the charts. AJ Bowen (THE SIGNAL, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) stars and if that dude is in it, the cult credit goes up by a factor of 5. Bowen just knows how to grab some cool projects. Review coming soon on this sucker.

That’s it for this week bastards.

Next week we have THE EXTERMINATOR (Blu), HALLOWEEN II (Blu), THE BASEMENT: 80’S HORROR COLLECTION, TRUE LEGEND, THE 10TH VICTIM, THE NOTORIOUS DAUGHTER OF FANNY HILL/THE HEAD MISTRESS DOUBLE FEATURE, MST3K: MANOS THAT HANDS OF FATE and more.

Until then…

HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK…

SALUTE!

SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE,

G
