Jimmy Wang-yu’s first two directorial efforts were very safe and familiar stories. Both THE CHINESE BOXER and especially ONE ARMED BOXER, the film he made with Golden Harvest after he broke his contract with Shaw Brothers, are similar in both tone and plot to other Wang-yu films. And while BEACH OF THE WAR GODS doesn’t tread any new ground, it is done on an incredible scale; large cast, large fights, and largely terrible dubbing (I have only seen this on dubbed VHS). I wouldn’t call this a classic, but it’s fun as hell.
SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE,
