[BUMP & GRINDHOUSE] A PLAYLIST FOR THE ECLIPSE!

We here at Daily Grindhouse are nothing if not timely. In that spirit, I present to you The Hastily Assembled Bump & Grindhouse Eclipse Playlist!

“Another Day of Sun”
Music by Justin Hurwitz; lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul
from LA LA LAND (2016)
Director: Damien Chazelle
Choreographer: Mandy Moore

Performed by Nicholai Baxter, Marius De Vries, Briana Lee, Angela Parrish, Sam Stone, and Company

“I Got the Sun in the Morning” (1946)
Music and lyrics by Irving Berlin
from ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (MGM, 1950)
Director: George Sidney
Musical Numbers Staged by Robert Alton
Performed by Betty Hutton and Company

(This is the only clip I could find. Seeing the Thai translation is awesome. The constant text boxes are annoying as hell)

See also: Ethel Merman and company on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1966. Judy Garland’s pre-recorded soundtrack from the canceled 1949 version of the film. And Dino.

“New Sun in the Sky” (1931)
Music by Arthur Schwartz; lyrics by Howard Dietz
from THE BAND WAGON (MGM, 1953)
Director: Vincente Minnelli
Dances and Musical Numbers Staged by Michael Kidd
Performed by Cyd Charisse (dubbed by India Adams), and Company

India Adams dubbed Charisse in most of her MGM films. Charisse needed to sound the same every time, to keep up the illusion that she was a strong singer.

“The Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In” (1967)
Music by Galt MacDermot; lyrics by Gerome Ragni & James Rado
from HAIR (United Artists, 1979)
Director: Milos Foreman
Choreographer: Twyla Tharp
Performed by John Savage, Treat Williams, Beverly D’Angelo, Don Dacus, Annie Golden, Cheryl Barnes, John DeRobertas, Grand L. Bush, and Chorus

See Also: The original Broadway cast of Hair at the 1969 Tony Awards (song starts at the 5:48 mark, but watch the whole thing). The 2009 Broadway cast on The View. And these closing credits.

“Open Up Your Heart (And Let the Sunshine In)” (1954)
Music and lyrics by Stuart Hamblen
from The Flintstones episode, “No Biz Like Show Biz” (aired September 17, 1965)
Directors: William Hanna & Joseph Barbera
Performed by Rebecca Page (Pebbles) and her mother Ricky Page (Bamm-Bamm)

You may recall the episode, but do you remember the lyrics being about the devil?

See also: Stuart Hamblen’s original recording.

“Good Morning Starshine” (1967)
from HAIR
See credits for “The Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In”

Look for Annie Golden, who so rarely gets to show off her marvelous singing voice as Norma on Orange Is the New Black.

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” (1983)
Music and lyrics by Jim Steinman
Video directed by Russell Mulcahy
Performed by Bonnie Tyler

In 1997, Roman Polanski directed a stage musical based on his film THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS in Vienna. The score was by Jim Steinman, and interpolated his 1983 hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The show was a big hit in Europe, but became a notorious flop on Broadway in 2002 (as did Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula in 2004 and Elton John’s Lestat in 2006). But that’s beside the point. What matters is that I can use “Total Eclipse of the Heart” because it was performed in a musical based on a movie. And that’s a win.
