William Girdler is one of the more underrated directors in the world of grindhouse cinema. He reminds me of Brian Trenchard-Smith in the way he manages to get spectacular results from so little. Due to a helicopter accident his life was cut short after 9 films but he left us classics like ABBY, GRIZZLY, and the Pam Grier starring SHEBA, BABY. COMBAT COPS (aka THE GET-MAN) came after two mediocre efforts from Girdler but is one of his best efforts. There is a tremendous amount of subtext to the film which often gets lumped into the blaxploitation genre. Not that that’s a bad thing, but it ain’t blaxploitation. The villain is a caucasian killer in black face (not Ted Danson) taking out middle class whites and Austin Stoker (a Girdler regular) is there to take him on. Dig it!
SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE,
