Adam Wingard, director of such smart and subversive genre films like A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE, YOU’RE NEXT, and THE GUEST, is making the leap to mega-budgeted blockbusters. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that Wingard has signed on to direct GODZILLA VS. KONG for Warner Bros.
Considering Gareth Edwards made the leap from the tiny budgeted MONSTERS to 2014’s GODZILLA and Jordan Vogt-Roberts went from the small indie KINGS OF SUMMER to this year’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures seem to be holding course by bringing on an eclectic indie director who loves genre films. With Wingard, they have arguably grabbed one of the best independent genre filmmakers out there.
Despite the hiccup of last year’s uninspiring reboot of BLAIR WITCH, Wingard has a terrific track record of mixing mayhem with comedy and nuanced character work. Hopefully working with a massive budget and studio mandates does not squeeze too much of his personality out of the film. At the very least, we probably now have a good chance of seeing Larry Fessenden in a giant monster movie. And isn’t that a cultural advancement for which we should all be pushing?
