CRITTERS is a New Line VHS Classic, it was one of those films that kids just gravitated to. Part of it was the promise of a more intense and horrific GREMLINS, which CRITTERS doesn’t deliver on, but that doesn’t stop the film from being fun. GREMLINS worked as a tribute to classic sci-fi (and Looney Tunes to some extent). CRITTERS is meant to be a tribute in the same way, but it works best standing on its own.
This was a big enough film to spawn a franchise but unfortunately, it was a franchise of half-assed films that didn’t work. By the way, have you ever seen an M. Emmet Walsh performance that just sucked? Yeah me neither. The guy just comes to play ball in every single film he is in.
See you on forty deuce,
