THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.
TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2017 (All show times are local)
USED CARS, the early collaboration between Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale that features a killer comedic turn by Kurt Russell, is playing at the Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas, TX at 9:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Quad Cinema in New York is doing a pretty impressive double feature from director Bruce Beresford. First up at 7:00 pm is TENDER MERCIES, the quietly uplifting character study of an alcoholic country singer that won Robert Duvall an Oscar. After that is the upsetting Australian military drama BREAKER MORANT. Tickets and info can be found here.
Douglas McKeown’s THE DEADLY SPAWN is an amazing showcase of practical effects work on a microbudget. The Alamo Drafthouse is doing a rare 35mm screening of the film at 10:15 pm. Go watch an alien monster devour New Jersey suburbanites in surprisingly gory detail! Tickets and info can be found here.
I still maintain that PERSEPOLIS is one of the best literary adaptations of recent years. You can catch a 35mm screening of it at Doc Films on the University of Chicago campus at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $5 at the door. Info can be found here.
Hammer Films’ THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN is being screened from a 35mm print at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX at 10:15 pm. Go watch Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in their first of many collaborations together. Tickets and info can be found here.
The Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR is doing a 35mm screening of Kung-Fu epic THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING at 7:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
