Hammer’s first foray into Gothic horror set the standard for all of the studio’s gloriously violent, gory flicks that followed. Peter Cushing chews up the celluloid as the mad doctor and Christopher Lee is a striking monster, even if his makeup isn’t up to par with the classic look Jack Pierce created for Universal a few decades earlier. A horror movie trendsetter if there ever was one.
