THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.
MONDAY, JULY 3, 2017 (All show times are local)
The IFC Center in New York is showing John Carpenter’s THE THING at midnight. Why not cool off from the heat of summer with this classic? Tickets and info can be found here.
BEAT THE DEVIL was John Huston’s very early spoof of crime films and had a hell of a cast (Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre, Gina Lollobrigida). But audiences weren’t ready to see those actors make fun of their screen personas and it bombed. The Siskel Film Center in Chicago is presenting a 4K restoration of the film at 3:00 pm that is a must see. Tickets and info can be found here.
Cinefamily in Los Angeles is showing the very funny Nixon/Watergate send up DICK at 8:00 pm. This is a 35mm screening. Tickets and info can be found here.
Wes Anderson’s debut feature BOTTLE ROCKET is playing at BAMcinématek at 2:00 pm and 9:40 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Steven Spielberg’s gritty classic TV movie DUEL is screening from a 35mm print at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR at 7:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
I’m a huge fan of The Cure so I think that passing up the chance to see their concert film THE CURE IN ORANGE should be a crime. It is screening from a 35mm print at the Metrograph in New York at 5:00 pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
Guillermo del Toro’s achingly sad and unsettling PAN’S LABYRINTH is showing at the Alamo Drafthouse in New Braunfels, TX at 8:15 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
If you know of an under-the-radar theater or film society regularly putting together repertory screenings or special events, feel free to let me know on Twitter!
