[DAILY RUNDOWN] TODAY’S COOL SCREENINGS!

THE DAILY RUNDOWN is a quick look at just a few of the cool screenings and film events happening around the U.S. every day. It is not intended to be an exhaustive, comprehensive list, but a sampling of the terrific genre cinema available to check out at your local art house, megaplex, film society, and repertory theaters.

THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017 (All show times are local)

I know it’s easy to say that Michael Bay hasn’t made a good film since THE ROCK (although I know of a few defenders of BAD BOYS 2), but anyone who has completely dismissed his 21st century output has apparently never seen PAIN & GAIN, an unruly, mean-spirited satire that boasts all the crazed visuals you would expect from the man who loves to “blow stuff up good,” but is also much, much darker than most studio films are willing to go. It is screening from a 35mm print at the Alamo Drafthouse in Brooklyn at 7:20 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

The Charles Theatre in Baltimore is screening Russ Meyer’s delirious spoof of “girls in trouble” melodramas BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS at 9:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

The Parkway Theater in Minneapolis, MN is screening George Miller’s epic action classic THE ROAD WARRIOR from a 35mm print at 8:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s very scary PULSE is playing at Videology Bar & Cinema in Brooklyn at 6:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

Rob Reiner’s terrific adaptation of Stephen King’s story The Body made it to the big screen as STAND BY ME. You can catch this coming of age classic at the Alamo Drafthouse in Omaha, NE at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

The bleak yet entertaining TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE is screening from a 35mm print at the Metrograph in New York at 1:30 pm, 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 9:30 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.

HAIL! HAIL! ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, Taylor Hackford’s electric documentary about the life of Chuck Berry combined with an all-star concert celebrating his 60th birthday, is screening from a 35mm print at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA at 7:00 pm. Tickets and info can be found here.
