This is the late Russ Meyer trying to be subtle. In other news… Russ Meyer sucks at subtlety… which is why we dig the hell outta his films. Meyer had already pounded through perversity and was going for a more dramatic feel and I guess he kind of achieved that mark however minor it may be. It still has all the Meyer trademarks which he would punctuate the next year with FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!
