PUPKIN AINT STOPPIN’ ‘TILL HE’S KOTTO-FIED!
So one of my favorite films popped up on Netflix instant this past week. It’s BLUE COLLAR, directed and co-written by Mr. Paul Schrader. It’s a great little film about the plight of some Detroit auto workers. Kotto stars with Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel among others. I love this film. Even named my production company in college ‘Flik MY Bik’ Productions after a famous Pryor line of dialogue. It should be noted that previous DVD versions of the film have been re-scored (some bigger songs replaced) but this version on Instant seems to have a more complete soundtrack. Anyway, seeing the film got me started poking around on Instant for other Yaphet Kotto films they currently have.
Quite the treasure trove I must say. You’ve got the now classic ACROSS 110TH STREET to kick off your Kotto festival. Great movie. You can follow that with he and Pam Grier in FRIDAY FOSTER which I am also a fan of. Next up you could try THE MONKEY HUSTLE (also starring Mr. Rudy Ray Moore), which is lightweight to say the least, but enjoyable. After that you could dive into the vigilante double of FIGHTING BACK (from the director of ALLIGATOR) and THE STAR CHAMBER. You can also check him out with Robert Redford in the prison flick BRUBAKER. You’ve even got the sort of ‘art’ film, DRUM with Kotto, Ken Norton and Warren Oates. Fun stuff people, especially if you’re a Kotto fan like me.
