I am not sure how many VHS tapes I have; I’ve just never bothered to count. They sit on shelves assigned to their respective genres, but the big-box VHS tapes get prime real estate at the top of the collection. They sit proudly advertising the likes of Sybil Danning, Elvira, Wizard Video, Massacre Video, Paragon Video and more. VHS isn’t just an old format that has developed some retro cred, to me it’s a reminder of discovery. It’s some of these same tapes I’ve had since the mid-80s that opened new doors from the cool to macabre. I’ve been anxiously awaiting Josh Johnson’s REWIND THIS!, his documentary covering the world of VHS. In fact, I got more excited when I saw this trailer pop-up this morning than I did for most of the Superbowl spots that aired last night. This is a giant love letter to a format that changed the way we watch films and none of us here at DG HQ can wait to get eyeballs on this. Dig it!
