PSYCHOTRONIC NETFLIX VOL. 46 – HOOKED!

Hey Psychotronic Netflix reader… you wanna get high? Well, you’ve come to the right place, as we’ve got ten available on Netflix streaming flicks for you eager to scratch that itch and keep the cold sweats from setting in, so join us for a batch of movies both celebrating and condoning various illicit substances. First ten are free, kid, the rest’ll cost ya.

10. Jennifer on My Mind (1971)

jennifer on my mind (570 x 449)

Noel Black (PRETTY POISON) directed this flick about a pair of young folk who fall in love in Venice, but then things end up getting bad once heroin gets involved. A fairly obscure counterculture flick starring Michael Brandon and Tippy Walker, but more notable for some of the supporting performers: Peter Bonerz, Chuck McCann, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway and Robert De Niro.

9. Loaded (1994)

loaded (570 x 841)

A group of friends go to a country house in order to make a movie, and as we all know, this is never the set-up for a happy ending, especially once LSD gets involved in Anna Campion’s sole effort as director.

8. Cocaine: One Man’s Seduction (1983)

concaine (570 x 321)

I can’t do a list like this without at least one made-for-TV movie, and this one features Dennis Weaver as a real estate salesman who falls down a path of peril after he gets hooked on the white stuff. Nancy Reagan apparently endorsed this flick, I’m guessing because it also has James Spader (as a good guy!) and Jeffrey Tambor.

7. Magic Trip (2011)

magic trip (570 x 804)

The LSD-soaked road trip by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters (memorably written about in Tom Wolfe’s “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test”) is chronicled in this doc from Alex Gibney and Alison Eastwood (GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON, ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM) in a typically entertaining fashion, narrated by Stanley Tucci.

6. Monkey On My Back (1957)

monkey on my back (570 x 443)

Long before Cameron Mitchell became a low budget movie regular, he played champion boxer Barney Ross in André De Toth’s underrated flick about Ross’s battle with morphine addiction, and showed what a great actor he could be when given the proper role. With Jack Albertson.

5. Maryjane (1968)

maryjane (570 x 450)

Fabian plays a teacher whose attempt to break up a local drug ring ends him up on the wrong side of the law and accused of marijuana possession in this AIP-produced ’60s JD flick that’s barely more believable than REEFER MADNESS and features Patty McCormack as one of the ladies at peril of being influenced by the devil’s weed. From Maury Dexter, of THE MINI-SKIRT MOB (also with McCormack) and HOUSE OF THE DAMNED.

4. Gridlock’d (1997)

gridlockd (570 x 848)

Vondie Curtis-Hall may be forever known for directing GLITTER, so it’s easy to forget how good his first film was. Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth play a pair of drug addicts trying to get clean, but find their efforts complicated by government bureaucracy in a film that has significantly more depth than its marketing and limited release suggested. With Thandie Newton, Charles Fleischer, Howard Hesseman, Tom Towles and John Sayles.

3. Permissive (1972)

permissive (570 x 844)

London’s swinging ’60s may have been the setting for a number of upbeat flicks, but Lindsay (DEVIL DOLL) Shonteff’s story of a young groupie’s descent into sex and drugs is so impressively downbeat you may need a shower afterwards. Band Forever More supplies much of the music on the soundtrack.

2. Panic in Needle Park (1971)

panic in needle park (570 x 866)

Al Pacino made a name for himself in the early ’70s, and his performance as a young heroin addict who befriends a homeless girl, dragging her into his addiction, shows why. Stark and well-directed by Jerry (SCARECROW) Schatzberg, and featuring Kitty Winn, Alan Vint, Raul Julia and Kiel Martin.

1. Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke (1978)

up in smoke (570 x 898)

The CITIZEN KANE of stoner comedies, UP IN SMOKE features dope, drugs, weed, grass, toot, smack, quackers, uppers, downers, and all arounders. You name, they got it. With Strother Martin and Edie Adams, who probably had no idea what they were getting into.
