While we here at DG love to talk about features, there are plenty of noteworthy short films out there as well, and the amount of showcases for smaller content online is increasing daily. Here are four recent shorts that provide a feature’s worth of entertainment in just a few minutes, featuring high production values and even some big-name stars.

THE FINAL MOMENTS OF KARL BRANDT
Dir. M. Francis Wilson

The murder of a scientist is solved thanks to the experimental technology he was working on, allowing his presense to reform in a digital state in this well-made, clever short film with great special effects featuring Fay Masterson and Paul Reubens that plays like a mini-episode of “Fringe.” I mean that in the best way.

IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME
Dir. Matt Spicer

What starts out as a routine relationship drama as “Community”‘s Gillian Jacobs grows tired of her boyfriend (CABIN IN THE WOODS’s Fran Kranz) soon turns violent in the most twistedly comic fashion in Matt Spicer’s entertaining short.

DEATHINGER
Dir. Tzu-Hsuan Fei, Kuan-Tien Chen, ke-Ching Chang, Ya-Chu Hsu, and Li-Ying Fu

Three avatars of death bring their offspring to school in order to learn the trade in this cute animated film from National Taiwan University of Arts’ Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts. (It’s pronounced like “designer” with a lisp.)

DEVIL

His father John Carradine had a number of film credits to his name after his death in 1988 thanks to some enterprising editing (JACK-O, anyone?), and now his son David can make that claim as well. Right after David Carradine’s death, footage emerged for the short film 8 FOR INFINITY in which Carradine taunted OURS lead singer Jimmy Gnecco. The film has not been released (though you can find a rough trailer for it here) but that footage has been used eerily in a music video for the band’s “Devil.”
