THE NEW RELEASE WALL FOR 11/8

A DEAD HAPPY HOOKER, WINGS HAUSER, HOPPER

DOES VADER, BRANDO FIRES KUBRICK,

AND KURT RUSSELL IS A BADASS AT 30K FEET,

THIS WEEK ON THE WALL!

It started with FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE, it ended with REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS. I am not sure how to connect the dots but in between those two flicks were LA SCORTA and NAVAJO JOE. Four flicks in one evening that lasted until about 2:00 am.  Needless to say I am dragging ass today so apologies for being late on the column.  We got some good shit for you this week though including our Pick of the Week which should be on our Top 10 list for the year. As always, click the title to buy the flick and support the site. Let’s get ramblin’…

If there was one box that stood out at my video store it was FRANKENHOOKER (with DEAD PIT being a close second). FRANKENHOOKER was the first “talking box” that we had and it was well played in the aisles of horror. “Wanna date” the box would scream. I heard that over and over until the battery died about a year later. The box may no longer speak, but the film still stands as an early 90’s horror-comedy classic.

Frank Henonlotter is a funny fucker. Humor is stamped all over his work from BASKET CASE to BRAIN DAMAGE. Those films have their share of shocking scenes and dance on the boundaries of the macabre, but they always know when to wink at the camera. I think both of those films are better than FRANKENHOOKER but I also think that FRANKENHOOKER understands what it is more so than Henonlotter’s previous films; a comedy with some horror riffs that ultimately play as a tribute to flicks like THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE. Henonlotter now works for Something Weird Video, finding and rescuing the flicks we all crave and treasure (he also directed the 2010 Herschel Gordon Lewis documentary THE GODFATHER OF GORE). I don’t know about you, but I would dig the hell out of another pic from the man that created a room full of exploding hookers.

As always, Synapse Films has done an incredible job with this release; it’s packed with 3 featurettes and one of the best audio commentaries I have heard this year featuring Henonlotter and Make-Up Effects Designer Gabe Bartalos. This is the uncut version of FRANKENHOOKER presented in a 2K high-definition transfer created from original vault materials and digitally re-mastered 5.1 surround sound. There is a reason Synapse is one of the best labels around, and FRANKENHOOKER is exhibit A.

The one and only film to be directed by Marlon Brando. After firing both Stanley Kubrick and Sam Peckinpah, Brando took control of the production which was troubled from the jump. The result is uneven but still effective. The second act is way too long but the ending is a pretty intense revenge inspired shootout. Too bad Brando never directed again, this showed some promise. It’s going to be nice to see this on Blu-ray instead of the public domain shit.

I hate fucking blooper reels, I think they take away from the film. When that film is a shit-box like THE CANNONBALL RUN however, I am all over it. This has to be the best blooper real ever created, no?

I was never a fan of David Lynch until I saw BLUE VELVET. ERASERHEAD didn’t work for me, THE ELEPHANT MAN was just okay and I would have rather have seen Jodorowsky’s DUNE than Lynch’s. BLUE VELVET though produced one of my favorite expressions: Gut punch! This film is dirty, creepy, and surrealistic. It makes you question even the best intentions. Plus, you get one of the best screen villains of all-time. Dennis Hopper is a sadistic mother fucker in this film. He lacks any sense of conscience and is bat-shit crazy, most likely just another day for Hopper.

The remake train doesn’t just roll through Hollywood. I have heard some good things about this so I am curious. If you can add something new to the story then great, if not, it’s a complete waste of time.

Sweetback says “A terrific, tight low-budget flick with style to spare, CROWBAR doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but manages to hit that horror movie sweet spot consistently. Cinematography and sound are a cut above, and while there are a few shaky actors, this would still sit nicely in the horror section of your local video store – if such a thing still existed.”

Two reasons to buy this bastard:
1. Wings Hauser
2. Wings Hauser cutting off a rapist’s arms with a chainsaw.
Done and fucking done.

This is a kind of crazy soft-core porn that plays like ROSEMARY’S BABY with orgies. Not a bad flick, just one that I am n0t sure what the re-watch is…

Goddamn I love this flick. This is tough as nails, vintage Kurt Russell. You know how cool this film is? Steven Seagal, who was near the height of his popularity at the time, dies in the first few minutes. You took a character who you thought would be an active participant in the film and killed him. That is awesome. Ultimately, who needs Seagal when you have Russell doing what needs to be done at 30K feet?

Finally, from the drawers of the hype file…

THE FISHER KING is finally on Blu-ray. This is a bare bones release but it’s more than worth the $13 to have this in 1080p. This is Terry Gilliam’s best film, a tragic tale of consequences that features brilliant work by the entire cast: Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl, Amanda Plummer, Michael Jeter and others.

That’s it for this week bastards!

We’re back next week with: EVIL DEAD 2 (Blu), SUPER 8, and more.

Until then…

Here’s to good watching this week, SALUTE!

SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE,
