DG PICK OF THE WEEK

Any legit film geek knows the epic cool of the VHS box cover, particularly those from the DIY horror genre. They were gruesome, bloody, and usually featured more than a few half naked chicks. The more violent the art, the bigger the box, the better the film… at least that’s what they wanted you to think. Did they always deliver on the promises? Fuck no, but that was half the fun! Camp Motion Pictures is paying tribute to the DIY’ers with a kick-ass collection of a 5-Film set on VHS & DVD in an exclusive VHS Collector’s Package that Includes Classic Early 1980’s Home Video VHS “Big Box” Packaging. If this bad-boy doesn’t sell out and become a collectors item, fellow bastards, we aren’t doing our job.

The Basement (1989) – Directed by Tim O’Rawe. Four strangers are summoned to the basement of an abandoned house by a mysterious entity known only as The Sentinel.  One after another, they are forced to witness heinous deeds they have yet to commit – and which will damn them for all eternity. The Basement is the lost 1989 Super 8 anthology feature film directed by Timothy O’Rawe (Ghoul School). Restored by director of photography Michael Raso in 2010, The Basement is a shining example of 80’s DIY cinema inspired by Amicus Films’ Tales from the Crypt and featuring elaborate special make-up and creature effects by Scott Hart.

PLUS: SOV classics VIDEO VIOLENCE 1&2. CAPTIVES, AND CANNIBAL CAMPOUT.

The revenge classic finally makes it’s way to Blu-ray. THIS is one of the many reasons why Synapse Films is one of our favorite distributors. The only way I have seen this is on VHS so it’s nice to finally have it not only in 1080p, but also in an uncut version.

I know a lot of you aren’t fans of this flick, but I think it is the fucking balls. Sure, it’s not even in the same ballpark as Carpenter’s classic, but I think the story is cool and the performances are just as good as they were in the first film. Now, if we could just get the third film on Blu-ray I would be a happy bastard.

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?

A classic.

I am jacked to see the Director’s cut of this flick. This is a really inventive film that never gets the attention it deserves. I remember seeing it on opening day at a shit theater where the sound cut in and out but I still walked away satisfied.

A giant shit sandwich that you can eat over and over again. This is fondly referred to as the worst film ever made and Torgo agrees with the master. This set from Shout! Factory contains the classic MSTsK episode where the fellas unleash on the film and also the original masterpiece free of the commentary. If you are seeing this for the fist time, I am one jealous geek.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick either MANHUNTER or SILENCE OF THE LAMBS… I would first choose SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and then ask the dude with the gun to kindly remove the weapon from the side of my head. Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter is pure bliss.

I feel like every other week we get a martial arts film that some jerk-off calls “the best martial arts film I have seen in a long time.” This was directed by Yuen Woo Ping, so that may actually have some merit. Looking forward to checking this out.

Another sequel that has it’s share of detractors but I still dig it.

It’s released by Blue Underground, so you just grab this ASAP cause you know it’s gonna be good right? This flick is actually pretty cool. I have the old Anchor Bay release so I am anxious to see the transfer on this.

A double dose of 80’s horror. Shatner, Ironside, Richard Lynch… whats not to love?

There were rumblings a few months ago that Dragon Dynasty may be going away but I haven’t been able to confirm that. The release of four titles in one week, while all kinds of cool, is a little unsettling. This smells like a catalog dump. Hope those are all just rumors.

Anyway, GOLDEN SWALLOW is a pseudo sequel to COME DRINK WITH ME. It features the return of return of Pei Pei but it’s just in a supporting role. It still kicks all kinds of ass though and I have yet to see a Chang Cheh film that bored the fuck out of me. The real gem in the four disc release though is BLOOD BROTHERS which has some staggering fight choreography and a killer plot set in the last few years of the Ching Dynasty.

IFC Midnight is finding some really cool and inventive films to release. Just ask the Soska Twins. This film was shot in one long take. That’s either going to feel like a gimmick, or it’s going to be cool as fuck.

When it comes to killer kids movie, BLOODY BIRTHDAY is still my favorite flick. CHILDREN OF THE CORN has never worked for me but I know some of you bastards dig it, so here it is.

Ahh a sequel on the list I can finally trash. This is a really lame follow up to the original which as far as horror anthologies go is a classic. Nothing works in this flick besides the animated sequences.

I am not a fan of period films. They are usually unwatchable films from unreadable books (h/t TRUE ROMANCE). That being said, a little nudity goes a long way and a lot of nudity is even better.

I haven’t checked out this Tinto Brass title but it’s fucking Tinto Brass so you know it’s on the list.

The original classics. The way they were meant to be seen. Fuck you George Lucas.

THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK BASTARDS!

Next week we have RAY HARRYHAUSEN DOUBLE FEATURE: SHE & THINGS TO COME (BLU), MIKE HAMMER: THE COMPLETE SERIES, VAMP (BLU), FINAL EXAM (BLU), ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK, and more.

Until then…

HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK…

SALUTE!

SEE YOU ON FORTY DEUCE,

G
