ELIJAH DRENNER PRESENTS: THE TOP 10 DANCE SCENES IN EXPLOITATION

Hey Bastards.

As most of you know, the Featured Filmmaker always writes a Top 10 list, there are no restrictions or caveats. Our Featured Filmmaker this week is Elijah Drenner, director of AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE and the upcoming THAT GUY DICK MILLER. He wanted to do something fun, something different, and he ended up with one of the coolest lists we’ve ever had the pleasure of publishing. Dig it!

ELIJAH DRENNER PRESENTS:

TOP 10 DANCE SCENES

IN EXPLOITATION

Presented by THAT GUY DICK MILLER now raising funds on Kickstarter.

10. CHERI CAFARRO

COURTS CASEY DONOVAN IN

GINGER (1971)

Cheri Caffaro radiates sex and this may be one of the hottest numbers in exploitation filmdom. When you consider that her co-star was a gay porn star at the time, this scene is even kinkier.

9. Sivanna Venturelli and

Paulo Turco dance and disrobe in

THE LICKERISH QUARTET (1970)

I love this movie and this sequence borders on camp and beauty. I prefer to think it’s the latter.

8. THE OPENING OF

FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! (1965)

If you’ve read this far and I need to explain this scene to you, than you’re a lost cause.

7. “I WANT YOU” DANCE SCENE

with Arlene Farber and Frederick Riccio in

TEENAGE MOTHER (1967)

Unlike the scene in BONNIE’S KIDS (1973), this number seems to go on forever, but Riccio’s epileptic dance moves are inspired.

6. Tiffany Bolling and Steve Sandor’s dance sequence

after that meet at the pool in

BONNIE’S KIDS (1973)

The music, the color of the film stock, their clothes, everything just comes together for me in this moment. It’s a scene that I wish went on forever.

5. Ruth Roman cutting a rug in

THE BABY (1973)

Go to the 4min mark in the clip.

This party just defies description in one of – if not the- weirdest PG horror films of the 70s.

4. Jimmy Lynch and Xavier Chatman

in the extended nightclub dance sequence

from THE HUMAN TORNADO (1976)

At one point, I swear the dancers are doing “The Time Warp”.

3. Sid Haig dancing in

PIT STOP (1969)

Sequence not available.

This is a marvelous little sequence with gorgeous black and white photography by Austin McKinney. It’s a brief moment in the film, but highly memorable. Awesome music by The Daily Flash.

2. RAY MILLAND DOING THE TWIST IN

X: THE MAN WITH X-RAY EYES (1963)

Go to the 39sec mark in the clip

There are few things more amusing than Oscar-winner Ray Milland stiffly twisting and looking at naked bodies with his new x-ray vision. Cool Les Baxter soundtrack.

1. “DO THE JELLY FISH” DANCE SCENE

BY NEIL SEDAKA FROM

STING OF DEATH (1965)

Directed by William Grefe, this has lots of close up of pretty girls in tight pants and a stupid dance that’s only equaled by a truly stupid song, yet strangely catchy…

Well there it is, Bastards. A funky as hell list from a cool cat who’s about to make one highly anticipated documentary on film icon Dick Miller. The only way to properly thank Elijah for this list is to jump over to his Kickstarter page and help fund the project. You still got plenty of time to pick up some nifty swag too.

Our thanks once again to Elijah for his time and dedication to the world of exploitation and genre filmmaking. We appreciate it more than we can ever say.
