Hollywood’s first werewolf flick plays more like a take on the Jeykll and Hyde tale, complete with a mad scientist’s lab and a monster that dons a cap and coat before heading out into the night! Originally penned as a potential Boris Karloff vehicle, the shape-shifter role eventually went to Henry Hull, who refused to don a heavy Jack Pierce makeup job. Settling on a lighter, more demonic look, Pierce created a memorable beast that sadly never joined the iconic ranks of his Universal brethren. A bit dated and melodramatic, the flick is still a must for anyone wanting to see how one of cinema’s most famous monsters got its start.
