VHS. Diehard collectors, often bearded, will stop at nothing to find them. And Dan Kinem (bearded), along with his partner in Big Box Shenanigans Levi Peretic (not bearded), will stop at nothing to film them. Unless they come across a video store going out of business or the slightest hint of VHS for sale somewhere, in which case, just give them 20 or 30 minutes, they’ll be with you in a moment.

ADJUST YOUR TRACKING: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE VHS COLLECTOR is a celebration of a format that is far from dead. VHS may not be at Best Buy, your Mom and Pop video store may be shuttered, but the passion for VHS is contagious and very much alive. “I realized how important VHS still is and how many people out there still love and collect it,” said Kinem. “We wanted to make a movie that oozed with this passion and informed people that VHS is more than just a cheap paperweight, it’s an important piece of film history that needs to be archived.”

With that goal, Kinem and Peretic hit the two-lane blacktop and tracked down collections that were thought to be only rumors, independent video stores still sliding VHS across the counter to a customer, and a passionate fanbase eager to talk tape. “We saw so many impressive collections,” reported Kinem. “I’ve seen 20,000 tapes in one place, an entire trailer packed with VHS, a basement turned video store, a collection with 99% only movies never released on DVD (with over 3,000 titles), etc. I love seeing other peoples’ collections!”

If you grew up knowing what a head cleaner was and want to get your eyes on some awe-inspiring collections, then you need to be at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland tonight at 7:30 (advance tickets are recommended).
