This presents a huge problem for me. Let me back up:
The Italian Connection is a glorious film series taking place at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City over the next eleven days. This represents the triumphant return of the Malastrana Film Series, who brought us the incredible line-up for Giallo Fever! in 2012 and a special screening of SUSPIRIA in 2013. Whereas those ventures centered around classic horror films and dramatically underseen gems from the Italian giallo surge of the 1960s and 1970s, this new slate focuses on poliziotteschi, or crime films. I can directly vouch for three or four of the dozen films that will be screening; all the others look to be at least as good, if not better. All you have to do is check out the poster art to get insanely excited about this film series.
Now about my problem.
Intellectually, I can comprehend that I cannot physically attend every single one of these screenings. It’s just not practical. That’s two screenings per day, for nearly two weeks. Anthology Film Archives is a wonderful place but I don’t expect they would allow me to camp out in the lobby for all that time. I’m also not sure I could feasibly commit every single evening for two weeks, not even for an event this exciting. All of these issues I can comprehend. The problem is that I have yet to accept this reality. I defy space and time. I plan to physically attend every single one of these screenings. It’s not possible. I must do it.
The truth is that even one of these screenings is a sure bet — if you (and/or I) can get to any of them, it will be time and space well spent. Over the next few days Daily Grindhouse will spotlight some of these titles individually, but as for right now, here is the entire — beautiful — schedule…
