When running a genre-film website, the realest horror is the sheer number of press releases and submissions that come in constantly, and more than that, the feeling — the knowledge — that plenty of great stuff is getting past you because there’s only so much time in a day, goddamnit.

But occasionally I have to make sure to stop and share one. CLOWN is a movie I’m interested in because it has a great premise, and one I’m curious about because of its director, Jon Watts, who made an impressively lean and muscular thriller called COP CAR that I saw and liked last year. If the name sounds familiar, he’s about to endure a whole lot of scrutiny as the director of the next SPIDER-MAN reboot. But it turns out before Marvel scooped him up, and even before COP CAR, he made this film, which is finally hitting select theaters this summer. As a student of film, I’m interested in how a filmmaker goes from low-budget horror to an indie thriller starring Kevin Bacon and then to one of the hugest movie projects that is earthly possible.
