CRIME STORY is a tough as nails flick that reminds you how good Chan could be both as an dramatic actor and as an action star. The film is a based on an actual kidnapping of a Chinese businessman. The trailer does a good job of overselling the action and stunts; while the film has its share of punch-ups and gun play, it also has a dark tone and is more serious than you would expect. So serious that Chan had a problem with the film and had it re-edited to lighten it up which created a serious rift between the star and the director Kirk Wong. Tough to know who’s side to be on when one starred in THE TUXEDO and one directed THE BIG HIT with Mark Wahlberg. I call it a draw.
