The expectations were pretty high for this anthology film. Tarantino was coming off of PULP FICTION, Rodriguez had just released DESPERADO and was still riding the indie high of EL MARIACHI, Allison Anders had MI VIDA LOCA, and Alexandre Rockwell had a nice little hit with IN THE SOUP. The result was a film that was trashed…HARD… by the critics, but fuck’em. While only one of the stories works well end-to-end (the Rodriguez directed story), each one has a really distinct style which creates an odd grab bag of cinematic cool. Best thing about this curious little flick is a Jerry Lewis-esque Tim Roth as the bellhop, dude nails the nutty.
