THE SHORT FILM OF THE WEEK IS ‘SLICE TO MEET YOU’

We are constantly looking for new and different films when it comes to bringing you the best in genre entertainment. Short films are often where you find the most exciting new filmmakers taking chances, yet most audiences don’t seek them out. With that in mind, we will be showcasing a short film each week in an effort to give a signal boost to shorts we enjoy. This week’s short is SLICE TO MEET YOU.

SLICE TO MEET YOU - Pizza

It is hard to make a classic slasher flick like HALLOWEEN or BLACK CHRISTMAS. Very few films find that special alchemy of suspense created by putting likable characters into a situation where the audience is afraid for their lives at the same time that they crave the fantasy movie violence such films promise. Much easier is the formula for any number of slightly nastier slasher knockoffs of those classics: take a group of jerks and unleash a killer on them, allowing the audience to cheer as one jagoff after another gets a sharp implement in the gut/throat/eye.

SLICE TO MEET YOU - Gamer

SLICE TO MEET YOU follows the slasher knockoff formula to good results by making the potential victim the kind of online gamer troll who talks shit to people all day and night…without ever having to say any of his crap directly to anyone’s face, unless it’s the pizza delivery person.

While SLICE TO MEET YOU is—like a lot of the films I feature in this column—rough around the edges, it makes up for its lack of polish with the kind of directness I look for in a short film. Co-writer/director Bob Pierce takes full advantage of using a repellant main character to force the audience to cheer for his demise. It is cheap, sleazy, and completely fun. Just like the slasher knockoffs we all dig.
