It’s the same old love story. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy messes around with teleportation. Boy slowly turns into a monstrous fly. Boy/Fly gets killed by avenging ex-boyfriend.
Whether it is a parable to man’s fight to understand the ever changing technological landscape, a thin reference to the AIDS epidemic, or the dangers of having acidic vomit, this remains one of the best science fiction films of the past 30 years and a unique moment in the Cronenberg filmography. Chris Walas created the creature effects (he also melted some Nazis in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) and would go on to direct the sequel to this film.
