— DG PICK OF THE WEEK–
Last week we had a triple feature from Warner Archives for the Pick of the Week, the first time in the history of the wall we have done that for a POTW. Well Bastards, sometimes the goods are so damn cool there is no other choice but to triple down and bruise the wallet. For the second time in as many weeks, it’s a triple play, this time from Synapse and their label Impulse Pictures. First up, the long awaited and slightly delayed THOU SHALT NOT KILL… EXCEPT!
With a story by our buddy Scott Spiegel and director Josh Becker, this was originally released back in 1985 as STRYKER’S WAR and released on video a few years later. For a film originally conceived as a short Super-8 picture, this has grown into a certifiable cult film with a devoted following. Bastards, this flick deserves all the praise it gets. After kind of a slow start this film snowballs into low-budget action done with style and skill. It should surprise nobody that film turned out the way it did with a crew that includes Spiegel, Becker, Bruce Campbell, and starring a Charles Manson-esque Sam Raimi.
This transfer turned out really nice. Synapse had problems with the first house they sent this to but after finding another shop to work the transfer to Blu they got the quality they wanted and the film deserved. Cheers to Synapse for sticking to their guns and not forcing a sub-par product onto the market. This is why Synpase is one of the best labels around. We’ll have a full review on this later today or tomorrow so stay tuned.
Next up, the second and third films from the Synapse label Impulse Pictures…
For the 100th anniversary of Nikkatsu, Japan’s oldest major studio, Impulse is dropping two great Pink films which Nikkatsu turned to in a successful attempt to remain profitable. These films featured sex, S&M, and all the nudity you could shake a stick at (and by stick I mean “dick”). First up is DEBAUCHERY.
Of the two being released today, this is the one that is more hardcore, for lack of a better word. It follows a bored housewife who decides to jump into the pool of sin and sex in an attempt to spice her life up. Mission accomplished, sister! Dig some kink? Dig this, Bastards!
Next up is SEX HELL. This isn’t your normal WIP flick, there is more story and care for the characters here than you would find in say your Jack Hill fare. Don’t get me wrong, you still get loads and loads of sex and nudity, there is just more to it than that. Really cool flick, not FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION cool, but worth the watch.
ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…
I don’t know a damn thing about this flick. In fact, I don’t think I have ever heard of it but with a cast that includes Sean Connery and Ian McShane circa ’75, I am in.
This is a remake of the 1945 classic but this time we get Christopher Plummer and Jacqueline Basset. I think this is actually an improvement over the original, Plummer is just creepy as fuck in this thing. Directed by Peter Collinson (THE ITALIAN JOB). Warner Archives, keeping the geeks happy every week.
That’s it for this week, Bastards.
We’re back on 4/10 with THE NURSES COLLECTION from Shout! Factory), THE DIVIDE, SHAME, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL, and more.
Until then…
HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK, SALUTE!
