— DG PICK OF THE WEEK–
Molly in CHARLEY VARRICK, Cody in THE OUTFIT, Dan in GOLDEN NEEDLES, Joe Don Baker was in a trifecta of cool that featured characters with single names. VARRICK and THE OUTFIT are masterpieces, flicks filled with intensity and double-crosses, but if you’re looking for a hardcore vigilante that swings a piece of mean hickory, then WALKING TALL is your drink of choice. The original film is tough as nails and one of the last films from Phil Karlson (BEN) before he went down for the dirt nap. Shout! Factory is giving this classic the Blu-ray treatment and while we haven’t had a chance to catch it yet, it sounds like this is another solid release from one of or favorite labels. Nothing beats revenge on Blu-ray! The sequels are sub-par at best (the first sequel being the worst of the two).
ALSO OUT THIS WEEK…
Jon Voight is not one of my favorite actors unless he is either with Dustin Hoffman working the streets or with Eric Roberts on a train. Having said that, this isn’t a bad film at all for fans of spy adventures and/or Nazi hunting. Ronald Neame made some good films, this one of’em.
I found this flick to be a giant shit-box devoid of any creativity… but it has its fans apparently so… here you go.
The good: Bernardo Bertolucci
The bad: 255 minutes of mediocrity peppered with brilliance.
Worth a watch… just not sure its worth buying.
After talking to our Featured Filmmaker Julia Marchese and hearing how committed Joe Carnahan is to 35mm, he instantly jumped up on my “cool” list. I love when Joe works in reality; staying away from the exagerated realities of THE A-TEAM or SMOKIN’ ACES. Look at NARC and THE GREY (read what he is doing with KILLING PABLO), those films to me are examples of what an incredible talent Joe is. THE GREY owned all kinds of ass… this is going to have a heavy re-watch at DG HQ.
That’s it for this week, Bastards.
We’re back next week with: A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL (Blu), THE WOMAN IN BLACK, and more.
HERE’S TO GOOD WATCHING THIS WEEK, SALUTE!
