What do you get when you take legendary director Sidney Lumet, legendary performers like Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Richard Pryor, and try to spin the legendary WIZARD OF OZ into an urban fantasy? Sadly, you get an awful mess.
Hit-and-miss music and shoddy direction bog down a handful of decent ideas and a couple strong performances.
At 134 minutes, though, the best part is that THE WIZ never fucking ends.
Seriously, Sidney. There’s no crime in cutting shit out.
