There it is. The first full trailer for Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, coming in August. On paper, it’s one of the strangest movies of the decade so far. In comic books, there’s never a second thought paid to the idea of a gun-fighting raccoon or a talking tree. In movies, these things are a harder sell, although I guess the LORD OF THE RINGS movie warmed us up for the talking tree side of the equation.
This property lives on the outskirts of my awareness. I don’t read these comics. I can talk freely to you about Batman and Spider-Man and even Captain America. For the Guardians Of The Galaxy, I’ve gotta take it to Wikipedia:
In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora,Rocket, Drax the Destroyer and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
Quill, or “Star-Lord” as he calls himself in the trailer, is played by Chris Pratt, so funny on NBC’s Parks & Recreation. “The villainous Ronan” (not Saoirse) is played by Lee Pace, who was Fernando Wood in Spielberg’s LINCOLN. Gamora, the green lady, is played by Zoe Saldana, who I guess has been watered down with yellow, since she was blue in AVATAR. Rocket is the raccoon, voiced by Zoe’s co-star in THE WORDS, Bradley Cooper. Dave Bautista, from THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS, is Drax The Destroyer. Rihanna cover artist Vin Diesel provides the voice of Groot, the afore-mentioned talking tree. Other roles are played by Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio Del Toro. You saw some of them in that trailer.
Very honestly, I have no idea what’s going on here. What I can say is that I am honor-bound to support anything this bizarre. Just when I was starting to complain about the Marvel movies getting a little same-y, they go and drop this freakshow on us. Ain’t a damn thing same-y about this trailer. The writer and director of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is James Gunn, an unlikely choice to helm a blockbuster action movie. His last film was 2011’s SUPER, and you can read the Daily Grindhouse review of that one here. In a gratifyingly weird way, this feels like more of the same. Time will tell if the rest of America is down with this level of oddness, but I know for damn sure I am.
What do you guys think?
